What the hell does it mean?

So we had a friend over a few weeks ago who is of Chinese descent. Me and my BF start quoting lines from the movie, and invariably, "the Chinaman is not the issue here" comes out. No problem, we're laughing, having fun, move on to the next thing.

About two weeks later, said friend calls my BF and is all, Dude, is K racist against Chinese or something, cuz when I was up there, she was saying Chinaman in like a derogatory way and, well, doesn't she know that's an offensive term?

Obviously, he is not a golfer! He said he had seen the movie, but apparently not enough to get the reference.

So what I wanna know is, has anyone else been misinterpreted while quoting the Big L???

this past fall i did a power point presentation of the Big Lebowski for my Folklore and Mythology Class. I compared how the Big Lebowski could be interpreted through Joseph Campbell's the Hero's Myth. I received an A. My presentation could have been better..I slacked and didn't have time to add music and such! It was also my first power point ..so it was very raw....but it was so much fun to do!

Question about the bowling team~

Is Donnie a third person on the bowling team? When Quintana does his little dance and then points to Liam, there seems to be a third person behind Liam who is also wearing a purple shirt. But then Quintana says that just him and Liam are going to "fuck you up."

Is there something that I don't know about bowling teams? I haven't lived in the states for toooooooooooooooooooooo long.

More than anything I want to begin a bowling league where I live in China... arghhh...

Lest I add 109 to the thread...I'm posting MY favorite line, but of course I have to tell a story behind it. I'm missing my car, which I had to unhappily "donate" and I am remembering how I missed my car last February...

I watched Lebowski on a Friday that February, and I shamefully confess it was my first time, though I consider myself a big Coen Bros fan.?

Then Saturday followed, and I went out to my "carport" all ready for a day trip out of Oaktown to SF. MY CAR WAS VANISHED. AND uninsured, so I was panic-struck. This was an aged and totally wrecked up Civic, but I wanted it back bad.

Got the O.P.D. to come take a report. Nice guys, but absolutely NO interest in my problem. They ignored the neighbor who had witnessed a couple of street toughs struggling the car out of my driveway. I pleaded with them to care, but they just did the least that they needed to do. Then gave me the number to call so that I could be "updated" on their progress.

In those few agonizing days after the theft, I would take the number and the phone, desperate for some news, for some LEADS! But before I could dial, words echoed in my head...

"Leads? Yeah, sure. I'll...uh...just check with the boys down at the crimelab. Yeah. They got four more detectives on the case. They got us working in shifts." (Thanks for posting this...Alex?)

I was never able to make the call. Never heard back from them either....odd.

I did, however, conduct my own search, and on Day 5 found the car approx. 6 miles from my apt. Both emptied and trashed. Signed by the Murder Dubs themselves! But it ran. And that story ended happily! Thanks for listening.

In the opening scene when the dude is writing a check for his Half/Half, it is dated for Sept. 11th, 1991. Exactly ten years before the terrorist attacks. What makes it even more interesting, is George W Bush's father is on TV in the background talking about Iraq. That must be the connection between Al Quaeda and Iraq W is always talking about.

Disappearing pomeranian

So, last night I'm watching The Big Lebowski for about the zillionth time, and it gets to the "mark it zero" scene, and as they're leaving the bowling alley, my cohort Launchpad and I simultaneously notice something we never noticed before: the pomeranian dog just kind of disappears when they get to the car.

The dog isn't in the carrier when they go outside - he's running along and yapping. Then when they get to the car, Walter puts the empty carrier on the roof, puts his bowling ball and the carrier in the back seat, and gets in the car. One could assume the dog jumped in the back, but there's no sign of him and he isn't yapping anymore.

Doh! Perhaps the sequel to Lebowski will be "Lebowski II: The Case of the Missing Pomeranian"

what i love about this movie...

this is one of those movies that never gets old. ever.
this is a movie i wish i had written.
this is a movie where i can pick up on something i never caught the first 100 times i watched it.
for example, it took me a while to realize that when the Dude says, "this agression will not stand...man!" he's stealing it from the geaorge bush speech in the grrocery store.
...that one took me a while.
what i love about this movie is how numerous people, when asked what they thought about it, said they say "fuck" too much.
but what i love most about this movie is that its actually based on a real person out there somewhere.

I went to New York last week and as I stepped off the plane into the gate at La Guardia, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, who played Smokey walked right past me.

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to shout "Over the line, Smokey! Mark it zero, dude."

i was just reading on the imdb forum for big lebowski (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/board/nest/5850410) that there was a line in the theatrical release of big lebowski that was removed from the video/dvd??? Something about Walter revealing he was never in Vietnam while spreading Donny's ashes... The Dude allegedly says "You were never even IN Vietnam!" or something. All the evidence is anecdotal, nobody can find proof other than saying "BUT I SAW IT". Hmmm.

Lebowski Bowl!!!!

OK- the same people that bring you the annual SF Indie Film Fest, which is much admired and adored, are planning on bringing you the First Ever Lebowski Bowling Tournament. We have selected an alley down in Daly City to be our target, because they have a great bar and are open all night. And they have food. So come as your favorite Big Lebowski Character (the Cowboy? Big Lebowski's Wife? His Daughter? the Jesus? the niliists?), and prepare to bowl the night away amongst your comrades.

I forget what day it's going to be, but I'll post more info when I know.

Lebowski Fest West - Las Vegas, NV Feb 27th-28th 2004

Lebowski Fest West will be held in Las Vegas, NV on February 27th-29th, 2004! The official hotel is The Imperial Palace which is right in the center of the Vegas strip. There will be a screening of The Big Lebowski on Friday Feb. 27th at the hotel complete with White Russians, costumes, and hundreds of Achievers shouting Over The Line! in unison.

The main event will be at the Sunset Lanes on Saturday Feb. 28th from 8-Midnight and will include bowling, costume contest, trivia contest, bowling contest, farthest traveled contest, oat sodas, and what-have-you.

Tickets will go on sale on Friday, December 5th, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. EST. Mark it Dudes, tickets are limited and will likely sell out quickly.

3rd Annual Lebowski Fest - Louisville, KY - June 19th, 2004

After headin' way out west, the big 3rd Annual Lebowski Fest will be held in Louisville (aka Lebowskiville) on June 19th, 2004. It will be at the Executive Bowl and the Executive West hotel will be the official hotel. Check here for all the latest on 6:19. Louisville will always be the home of Lebowski Fest and the site of the big annual events.
